He and Khawaja combined for an unbroken third-wicket 195-run partnership, putting the tourists firmly in charge before rain stopped play after 81.1 overs.

Smith became the 15th different player to reach 10,000 Test runs and fourth Australian after Allan Border, Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting.

He is also the fifth-fastest player to reach the landmark (205 innings), behind only Brian Lara, Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara and Ponting.

Smith went on to record his 35th Test century, moving him to seventh on the all-time list behind Tendulkar, Jacques Kallis, Ponting, Sangakkara, Joe Root and Rahul Dravid.
