The pair are up against Australia batsman Travis Head and India bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the prize.

Root is the number one ranked Test batter in the world after scoring 1,556 runs at an average of 55.57 this calendar year.

The Yorkshireman also surpassed Alastair Cook to become England's highest-ever Test run-scorer in October.

During the tour, India secured a 2-2 (4-2 SO) win against Belgium in their first game but lost 2-3 in the second match against the same opponent. They faced a narrow 5-4 defeat against Bredase Hockey Vereniging.

This was announced by FIH President Tayyab Ikram who said: "Giving more opportunities to play to a larger and more diverse number of National Associations is one of the key pillars of our empowerment and engagement strategy."

Brook, meanwhile, has rapidly developed into one of the world's leading all-format players and ranks second to Root on the ICC's list of Test batters.

The 25-year-old scored 317 in the first Test against Pakistan in October, England's fifth-highest innings of all time.

He and Root put on 454 during that innings, England's highest-ever Test partnership.

Bumrah's 71 wickets put him top of the tree for Test scalps in 2024, while Head has starred for Australia in all formats.

Australia's Annabel Sutherland, Melie Kerr of New Zealand, South Africa's Laura Wolvaardt and Chamari Athapaththu of Sri Lanka have been nominated for the women's award.

Kerr led New Zealand to the T20 World Cup title this year and Wolvaardt was the top run-scorer at that tournament.

Sri Lanka captain Athapaththu skippered her team to Asia Cup successswerteplay, while Sutherland became the ninth woman to make a Test match double century in February.
